Kansas City, Mo – February 29, 2008
The National Association of Small Trucking Companies (NASTC) selected James Smith, a driver for Midwest Express Corporation, to be the namesake of the Professional Drivers Medical Depot (PDMD) in West Memphis, AR. A plaque honoring the distinction was placed at the West Memphis clinic in March 2008.
Smith, Kansas Motor Carriers 2005 Driver of the Year, has had a 53-year, accident-free career. He has driven for Orscheln Brothers Truck Line, the U.S. Army, and Consolidated Freightways. Currently he works for Midwest Express Corporation, with whom he has been associated for the last 15 years.
Greg Orscheln, of Midwest Express, said, “Among the many reasons James Smith was nominated for this honor were his exemplary safety record and his years of continuous service.”
Smith started driving a milk route for his father in 1952, at the age of 15. He continued driving during his Army service. Following his honorable discharge in 1956, he started driving commercially. In 1959 Jim went to work for Orscheln Brothers Truck Lines. He has been associated with the Orscheln family of trucking services ever since.
