Midwest Express is a proud member of many organizations. One of the affiliations of which we are most proud is one we have with the National Association of Small Trucking Companies (NASTC) based in Gallatin, TN. NASTC was formed almost 20 years ago to promote the many strengths of small trucking companies and the advantages we provide to our Customers.
The impact small carriers have on the market and the US economy is great. Small trucking companies with less than 50 trucks represent around 40% of the truckload market, a greater share of the market than the top 100 largest carriers in the US.
What makes small trucking companies so effective is the consistency they provide to our drivers. Drivers have unique needs for miles and hometime. Some drivers prefer higher weekly miles with less hometime while others seek to drive Monday through Friday so they can be home on weekends. Small trucking companies maintain close relationships with drivers and know their unique needs. Drivers are provided miles and hometime consistent with their needs.
As a result of this consistency, small trucking companies have lower driver turnover than their larger counterparts. Low turnover reduces variability within the organization which improves the ability of the organization to manage its performance in terms of safety and customer service. How many times have we heard the complaint from our customers that larger companies are unable to serve their needs with consistency? Consistency sets small companies apart from their larger competitors.
